Veo, Cab / Sauv 2009.

Let me state for the record that Veo is always a surprise. Its low price, and availability at Sam's Club should not deter one from buying it. I bought this bottle for $6.99 at Sam's. I think it was last year around Christmas and we're just now getting ready to drink. As it would turn out, it was one of the best wines I've had this year.

A wonderful full flavor, and very dry, with just a hint of spice. The nose on it is spritely and delightful, and the finish is very clean. I recommend it served with some kind of Beef, and Chimichurri sauce, with mixed vegetables. I normally do not write short reviews on wine, but my time of late has been co-opted with work. I will be writing more in the coming days and weeks. Also, please check out the other blog, about spirits.

Cupcake 2009 Chardonnay.

So, our first wine review of the new year, is Cupcake. It is a 2009 Chardonnay. The color of it is nearly clear. An extremely pale wine, with a very subtle flavor. By subtle, I'd go as far to say, nearly non-existent. It's also a dry wine, with no aftertaste. I mean NO aftertaste at all.

It's extremely smooth, and would go with just about any light cuisine. Fish, scallops, crab, chicken, salad, quiche or even dessert. In fact, I would wager it would go very well with some kind of pie or ironically cake.

The price of the wine was extremely reasonable as it was purchased on the cheap at Sam's Club for $6.95 a bottle. I could be wrong it could have been cheaper than that.

It has a decent alcohol content, but unlike some other wines, will not put you under the table if you have more than one serving. Which is really what this wine is good for, ONE serving. I couldn't actually bring myself to having a second glass because there really wasn't any point.

It was produced by Cupcake Vineyards, in Livermore, CA. They also made a red which we have in the cellar. I will likely give that a shot in the coming days to see if it's as underwhelming in the flavor department as the Chardonnay. Given that Chardonnay shouldn't be overwhelming, it would be nice though if you could taste it.

The color of it was truly a beautiful pale yellow. The scent of it really nice. It has all the earmarks of a quality Chardonnay, but at the same time gives you really nothing in the way of flavor. I'm beginning to think that this wine is truly just a table wine, and in that regard I give it 5 stars.

It is a very good wine, that you could drink every day, and never be disappointed, so long as you paired it with something. I give the makers credit for engineering a wonderful wine that is suited exclusively for pairing.

The packaging was underwhelming, as they spend no money on the creation of their labels. The price is perfect, and an excellent value. If you see it on the shelf, give it a try. Especially if you're having a nice quiet dinner outdoors. I think that is what was missing from the equation. This wine should have been part of a picnic trip, or outdoor bistro meal.

Either way, I give it 5 out of 5 for flavor. 1 out of 5 for packaging, and 5 out of 5 for look, color, and scent.

I think we're missing some posts.

I am pretty sure we reviewed a lot more wine than just these.

Good Lord... We have had a really bizarro year.

Typically my wife and I are pretty good about getting reviews out, but we were so busy last year with getting the house fixed, as well as putting my company back together that we got completely overwhelmed. What's worse, is that we didn't drink nearly as much wine that was worth reviewing as we would have liked!

With it being the new year, and with us being back to somewhat normalcy, we plan to start reviewing wines again on the 15th of this month. So in about a week, we should be posting reviews again, and will start posting more often.

Our soon to be finished wine cellar.

We're nearly done, and will be back to reviewing wine soon. We've had a bit of a snag with our scheduling and our workloads. We're reaching an equilibrium, and can get back to posting fairly regularly. The basement was just a cluttered mess with a lot of garbage in it. I cleaned it out, and set about creating a liveable space where we can enjoy a glass of wine in a nice warm atmosphere. I am finishing the floors this evening, and will hopefully post pictures of the whole finished project eventually.

Thanks for looking!

Sorry we've been off line for a while.

My lovely wife and I bought a house in January, and to say the very least we've been having to spend a lot of time dealing with home repair. The move which lasted about 3 weeks was quite an endeavor as my self-employment created some issues.

We are currently putting in our wine cellar, which should be neat when finished. We will be doing our wine reviews again very soon. We have had a bit of luck stocking up on some great wine, and we look forward to sharing our thoughts soon enough.

When the Wine Cellar is finally finished, I'll take some pictures and post them. We plan on doing a weekly podcast from our wine cellar when we can get things situated with that.

Take Care, and we'll be back soon.

Port.

This was my first experience with port and I am really glad we picked this up. Victory Tawny by R.L. Buller & Son.

The color in the glass was beautiful. Being clueless I wasn't sure what color "tawny" was supposed to be. This particular one is dark in the glass. Towards the bottom there is a lovely ruby highlight. At the edge of the glass, as you look down, you can see the lovely tawny color. A kind of brown amber.

The scent is like a perfume. Not some overly floral sinus choking stench but a lovely bouquet with a hint of sugar in it. I love smelling this wine. This is the best smelling wine we've blogged about and the best I've ever had.

The taste is smooth. Soft. Very sweet and delicate on the tongue. I freaking love this stuff. There is a definite woodiness that is absolutely lovely. I just really don't have the vocabulary to do justice to the description. Trust me, it's well worth the money.

Remember how I said I would never give out 5 stars? I was wrong. This port completely deserves 5 stars. Or whatever unit of happiness you want to use.

We baked shortbread cookies that have a chocolate drop in them. Not the best choice for this wine. The sweetness of the semi-sweet chocolate didn't really work with the woody aromatic of the port. The shortbread part of the cookie wasn't bad with it, though. Fresh bread just came out of the oven. Hot buttered bread should be a much better match.

Recap. 5 out of 5 units of tasty, happiness. Oh yeah, there's quite the alcohol content but it's not harsh at all. It'll sneak up on you. Don't drive. Seriously.
